Cards for Care Campaign Unites Tech Startup and Emergency Assistance Foundation to Help Families in Need

The Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation and CardPool partner to get gift cards in the hands of families caring for catastrophically-ill children.

Los Angeles— Many of us can dig into our purses, wallets or desk drawers and find unused gift cards we never intend to use. Launching today, the Cards for Care Campaign lets you find value in these unused cards by letting you redeem them to help a family in need.

Cards for Care is a partnership between the Los Angeles-based Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation and Silicon Valley technology startup CardPool. The Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation helps with urgent expenses, within 24 hours, to allow single parents to stay at their child’s bedside during catastrophic illness.  CardPool allows users to buy, sell or trade their gift cards to get exactly what they want, whether it’s a discounted gift card or simply cash.

The Cards for Care campaign will get gift cards for gas, food, clothing and other necessities into the hands of families dealing with the catastrophic illness of a child. Users can visit the CardPool website and buy cards at a discount that they can donate directly or trade in their unused cards to benefit the Foundation.

This unlikely partnership began less than a week ago, when the Andre Sobel team came across an article about CardPool in the Silicon Valley tech blog, TechCrunch. Immediately, the foundation connected with CardPool, and in less than a week, Cards for Care was set to launch.

“CardPool is excited to announce a very important partnership with the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation to help provide much needed support for families and children in need,” remarks Anson Tsai, co-founder of CardPool.  Within hours of the initial call from the Foundation about a partnership, Anson and his team had already launched the plan to set up online giving and put together a page on the CardPool site for Andre Sobel.

Cards for Care will be running through 2010 as part of “The Gift of Time” celebration for the 10th Anniversary of the Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation. To participate, visit and look for the “Cards for Care” logo. Share the campaign with your friends and family using the hashtag #cards4change.
