Be a Valentine: Help Families in Need Now

We have four cases in need of immediate assistance. You can help make a difference now.

January 2010 — E. is a nine year old with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.  He was originally diagnosed in August of 2009, and his frequent hospitalization, clinic visits and radiation appointments were taking a severe financial toll on his family.  His mother could no longer afford to pay the family’s rent and outstanding phone and utility bills when the social worker contacted ASRL. We were able to give the gift of time together to E. and his mother and three siblings by paying these bills.   ASRL has assisted with $840 in rent, $406 for the family’s phone bill, and $68 toward keeping their utilities turned on while E. continues his treatment with Mom at his side.

January 2010 — H. is a three-year old with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who is currently undergoing chemotherapy and spinal taps for treatment.  H.’s mother works full time in a restaurant to support her three children, while H.’s father was recently laid off.   The family tried as hard as they could to remain self-sufficient, but mom’s small salary was simply not enough and they fell behind on their electric bill.  ASRL received a request from the social worker in charge of this case just 24 hours before the electricity was to be shut off in H.’s house. ASRL immediately paid $303, the amount past due on the family’s electric bill.

January 2010 – J. is a 17 year old boy with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma and glaucoma OS.  He lives in Chicago with his mother and father.  J.’s mother quit her job to care for her son, and his father alone cannot support the family.  Currently, the family is behind on bills and J. is in the hospital.  ASRL stepped in to pay the so that they could remain in their home during this tough time.

A. is an 11 year old boy whose world turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Bukett’s Lymphoma just one month ago.  He usually lives with his mother and 5 year old sister, but has remained in the hospital, three hours away from his home, since his diagnosis.  Because his chemotherapy is so intense, mom has had to resign from her job to stay with her son. She has returned to their home only twice since he was admitted.  Mom’s unemployment check is the only income they receive so ASRL was honored to assist with the property taxes on their house, so that they would not lose their home while they endure this painful crisis.
