Meet Liam and His Mom Kristi

In August 2008, soon after Liam was born, he was diagnosed with infant leukemia.  This shocking news came just after his mom Kristi’s own mom had just died of cancer,  and Kristi was struggling to cope with this loss while parenting her two young sons alone. Baby Liam spent much of his first year of life in chemotherapy treatment with Kristi at his side.  She supports her two little boys (now ages 2 and 5) by working as a waitress when she can and lives by the motto “Don’t complain!” But in order to be where she wanted to be — with Liam in the hospital –  Kristi had to go without pay as she is paid by the hour.  In fact, she lost one restaurant job because of her need to be with Liam during his hospitalization – at a wonderful hospital that is three hours from home. When ASRL learned that Kristi was struggling financially to be both a caregiver and breadwinner, ASRL stepped in to keep Kristi at Liam’s hospital bedside by paying her rent.
