Meet Romello
When Romello was only 19 months old, his sickle cell disease forced the need for a bone marrow transplant. For the young toddler, this dangerous procedure was fraught with complications and infections. He endured two additional transplants when the first proved ineffective. Each time his single mother and friends and families prayed desperately for a cure. When he was first diagnosed, his mother left the Army for a less demanding job so that she could tend to Romello’s needs. When he went in for the transplant, she stopped working entirely and remained vigilantly at his bedside. She was living only on her savings, and requested assistance from ASRL to pay for the cost of her insurance premium. ASRL also paid for toiletries and non-perishable food items to keep in Romello’s hospital room with her. The unwavering devotion of Romello’s mother must have been a comfort to him in his final hours. She was at his the bedside at the time of his death. ASRL then assisted with funeral expenses and her trip back home alone.
